Prepaid cards are a form of payment card that can be loaded with money by you or by someone else, depending on the prepaid card brand you decide to go for.
They look and work just like any normal credit or debit card, allowing you to make purchases online and in-store, and to withdraw cash from ATM machines. Unlike credit/debit cards, with a prepaid card you are only limited to the amount of funds that are loaded to you.
What this means is that you can’t go overdrawn or incur greater losses than the stored value of the card, if you were to lose or have your card stolen. This is different to credit and debit cards which are linked to an account.
There are several types of prepaid card available today, from gift cards, to multi-currency and travel money cards, as well as everyday use cards and business prepaid cards, all of which sharing the same core benefits of being safer and more convenient than cash.
Almost all prepaid card brands allow you to apply for a card online, through their websites. However, depending on the card you’re looking for, you may be able to get one over the counter at certain retailers, however, these cards will typically have load restrictions and lower limits than those you apply for online.
